Experiential Education: A Look at SPEC Teaching Methodology

Andrew Wright
About the Workshop
The SPEC (Student-Oriented, Problem-Based, Experiential, and Collaborative) teaching methodology is a cutting-edge approach designed to enhance experiential learning, especially in outdoor and adventure education. Developed by the Wilderness Education Association (WEA), SPEC empowers educators to foster active participation, critical thinking, and collaboration among students.
In this hands-on workshop, you will be introduced to the four pillars of SPEC and explore how to integrate them into your teaching practices. Through a combination of theory, group activities, and practical application, participants will learn how to create dynamic, student-centered lessons that not only promote engagement but also cultivate real-world problem-solving skills.
After a comprehensive introduction to the methodology, participants will break into small groups to design a mini-lesson plan using SPEC principles. The workshop will conclude with presentations, feedback sessions, and key takeaways to implement in your educational practice.
