Embedding Ecoliteracy: Transdisciplinary Links and Driving Questions – A Framework for Integrating Ecoliteracy, Outdoor Education, and Community Action
Rosie Giordano
Which key elements of the biosphere, human society and culture are fundamental to environmental systems, the continuation of life and sustaining flourishing communities? In this practical workshop, we will consider a framework for transdisciplinary learning to support these key elements. Structured around driving questions and The Sustainable Development Goals the framework integrates Ecoliteracy, Outdoor Education and Community Action into a Secondary or Primary curriculum. The workshop will also provide an opportunity to share strategies and successes towards supporting curriculum change in your own setting.
About Rosie
As Ecoliteracy Coordinator of St Andrews International School and a Year 6 teacher currently, Rosie’s passion lies in education for sustainable development. With a geography background and a Master’s degree in Education and sustainable practices in schools, Rosie draws from the global, holistic philosophy of the IB and her passion for outdoor and place-based learning which underpin her approach to embedding ecoliteracy into school life and the curriculums at Green Valley. Through transdisciplinary learning, in Primary and Secondary curriculums, Rosie encourages her students to develop compassion and awe for the natural environment and develop deep empathy for their local communities so that they are intrinsically motivated to want to make a difference. This is an ongoing quest that Rosie seeks to develop at Green Valley by combining experiential, inquiry and project-based learning, systems thinking, authentic community action and Outdoor Ed experiences.
