Climbing Wall Instructor Course
Pre-conference Workshop
The CWA Climbing Wall Instructor Certification Course will address the technical skills necessary to participate in an instructional program at a climbing facility.
As indoor climbing continues to rise in popularity, the need for qualified instructors has never been greater. This Climbing Wall Instructor certification course, by the Climbing Wall Association (CWA), prepares you to effectively instruct and manage climbing activities in a safe and professional manner.
Whether you are a seasoned climber or looking to enhance your skills, this course will provide you with essential knowledge and practical experience in areas such as:
- Equipment and facility inspection
- Client orientation and instruction
- Teaching top rope skills
- Teaching lead skills (optional)
- Bouldering and spotting
- Emergency procedures
Certification Levels:
- Level 1: Bouldering
- Level 1-2 Combined: Bouldering, Auto Belay, Top Rope
- Level 1-3 Combined: Bouldering, Auto Belay, Top Rope, Lead Climbing
Certification Requirements:
The minimum requirements are:
- The candidate has personal climbing experience.
- The candidate meets the minimum age requirement.
- The candidate meets the minimum number of recommended outings for the highest level of certification sought.
– Level 1: 16 years old; minimum bouldering experience; can climb Vo
– Level 2: 18 years old; 20 top rope climbing outings; can top rope 5.8 (5b)
– Level 3: 18 years old; 40 lead climbing outings; can lead 5.9 (5c)
Facilitators

Mario Wild
Director of Technical Operations and Risk Management at Progression, Mario has been with the organization for over 19 years. He played a critical role in the command center during the Thai Cave Rescue, helping design rope system strategies. At Progression, he draws on his expertise in technical rope work, outdoor facilitation, wilderness medicine, and climbing instruction to create impactful courses and programs.
