Sustainability & Next Steps: Leading Lasting Change through Place-Based Ecoliteracy

Rosie Giordano

Ecoliteracy Coordinator, St Andrews International School

Wherever your school is on its journey to embedding sustainability, this workshop provides a framework for leading lasting change through a program that goes beyond sustaining environmental improvement and student stewardship. It engages educators and students with an approach that renews and reconnects with cultural roots, while restoring and regenerating ecological and community systems.

Using practical examples, we will explore how local environments, community contexts, and outdoor education are powerful tools for transdisciplinary learning, with clear steps for implementing curriculum change in your own setting through place-based ecoliteracy. An antidote to apathy and eco-anxiety, ecoliteracy empowers students to regenerate the future as confident, motivated changemakers.

About Rosie

As Ecoliteracy Coordinator at St Andrews International School, Green Valley, I believe that strong connections to place, community, and cultural heritage are key to developing students who care, feel motivated, and are empowered to make a difference. Through transdisciplinary learning across Primary and Secondary, I draw on a background in Geography, PYP teaching, and a Master’s in Education and Sustainability.

My work is driven by a commitment to helping students develop compassion and awe for the natural world, alongside deep empathy for the communities around them through meaningful, place-based learning. If you share this quest, I look forward to connecting with you too.
