Desert Expedition Equipment & Technology: Operational Tools for Safety, Navigation, and Sustainable Field Practice

Shuhd Al Jafari
Desert environments present unique operational challenges, from extreme heat and limited communication infrastructure to accessibility across difficult terrain. This session explores the integrated equipment and technology systems used to deliver safe, efficient, and inclusive desert-based experiential learning programs.
Drawing on practical field experience, the session will cover navigation and communication tools, environmental monitoring for heat and safety, and adaptive mobility solutions that enable participation for people of determination. It will also highlight how sustainable, low-impact equipment choices can support responsible program delivery in remote environments.
Through applied examples and interactive discussion, participants will gain practical insights into selecting, integrating, and prioritising equipment for effective desert expeditions.
