Educator at Green School NZ & Camp Facilitator, Green School NZ

At Green Camp New Zealand, the land is our classroom and community is our compass. This presentation explores how immersive, land-based learning experiences can transform the way people connect with themselves, each other, and the environment.

Grounded in Te Ao Māori perspectives and enriched by global educational practices, Green Camp NZ programmes are designed to honour relationships with the whenua (land), with culture, and with community. By combining sustainability challenges, outdoor adventure, and wellbeing practices, participants develop resilience, empathy, and leadership skills that extend far beyond the camp experience.

This session will highlight stories and practical examples of how learning on the land creates authentic opportunities for growth, strengthening identity, belonging, and collective responsibility. Attendees will gain insights into how Green Camp NZ is cultivating a new generation of learners and leaders who are deeply connected to both people and place.

About Di

Director, Green Camp New Zealand | Founding Educator, Green School NZ

As Director of Green Camp New Zealand and a founding educator at Green School NZ, I bring a wealth of experience in designing transformative learning experiences that connect people with nature, culture, and community. My leadership has been integral in shaping innovative wellbeing and education programs that nurture both learners and facilitators.

With a professional background as a Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) for the Ministry of Education, I specialised in inclusive and strength-based practices that empowered educators, families, and learners across Taranaki. I established collaborative SENCO networks, shared interventions at Massey University, and introduced pioneering strategies to create equitable pathways for all learners.

At Green School NZ, I have held key leadership roles, including Head of Learner Experiences and Wellbeing, Community Connections, and Child Protection Officer. In these capacities, I have championed student welfare, holistic education, and culturally responsive practices. I have led initiatives that integrate Hauora/wellbeing into the curriculum, foster global citizenship, and promote mental health and resilience.

As Green Camp Director, I facilitate immersive programmes that showcase the best of Aotearoa New Zealand sustainability, indigenous knowledge, and experiential learning while building bridges with local and international communities. My work extends beyond the school gates, fostering partnerships, supporting international families, and curating events that inspire, connect, and empower.

Passionate about creating spaces where people feel safe, inspired, and connected, I am dedicated to developing the next generation of compassionate, confident leaders who can thrive in a rapidly changing world.
